Cat feeding
The cat is essentially carnivorous. So, he will be given food with meat supplemented by vegetables and cereals. The cat diet must be well-balanced and so, must contain lipids, carbohydrades, minerals and vitamins. His age, his weight, his health and his activity must be considered to find a good diet ( A cat walking outside compared to a sedentary one living in a flat / “Speedy Cat” vs “Couch Potato”).

The cat tends to nibble and likes snacking all the day long. He generally self regulate his food. Be careful with the greedy ones !
Industrial cat food generally supplies a well-balanced diet and a large range of products easy to use. This kind of food comes in three forms :
Dry foods in the form of croquettes containing little water with meat ( beef, chicken,….), fish cereals and vegetables.
Semi-moist foods coming in the form of squeeze packaging, less moist than canned food ( 30 to 60% of water) and that are generally very tasty.
Moist foods in the form of canned food, containers or even frozen food ( mousse, small chunks, terrine). They are often richer in proteins. See the ingredients to adapt the ration to the special needs of the cat.
“Home-made” recipes are also appreciated. You can prepare the meal of your cat using fresh ingredients ( meat, fish, vegetables, cereals, oil, yeast..).
Pay attention to the balance of each ration. It is generally recommended to use 50% meat or fish, 20% vegetables, 20% cereals and 10% supplement ( yeast, oil ). A yolk is also extremely appreciated.
Natural preys are part of food if your cat walks around in nature for he might catch birds or rodents. A small rodent also represents a full meal. Pay attention to sick and poisoned preys that might infect your feline. It is often difficult to control the preys that are caught and gulped…
Water remains essential for the cat rarely drinks but he must constantly have fresh water at his disposal especially if he eats croquettes.
Grass is also prized for the cat likes to choose and enjoy some blades. If he lives in a flat, you can buy grass in container in some shops. Moreover, it will also prevent from damages as regards houseplants that could be poisonous for the animal. Grass helps the cat to get purged and cleared of possible hairballs. .
Avoid:
- Do not give milk to an adult cat for he might have the runs.
- Do not give dog food for they are low in taurine and they aren’t suitable for cats.
- Do not give the “left-overs” that might contain spices, too much fat, sugar….
Avoid any sudden change of diet .
Dish out in a clean dish in a quiet home ground at room temperature on a surface easy to clean. Do not let the remains of the ration in the dish (especially in summer ) and above all do not forget some fresh water at the disposal of your friend : the cat.
